What are Soy Candles?  Soy wax is a new alternative to paraffin wax, made from soybeans, is renewable and cost effective. The soybean is one of the most versatile products used today. It has been a high protein source for millions of people for thousands of years. Soybean wax also seems to be the most promising natural wax available.

Natural waxes such as soy waxes are gaining in popularity but natural waxes are not new. Beeswax and tallow were used in colonial times to produce candles. Beeswax is a great natural alternative to paraffin, but unfortunately, to get the same results as a soy-based candle, it is cost prohibitive to use 100% beeswax in candles.

Soy is in lots of things like body & skin care products, hair products, crayons, paint removers, and cleaning products. The production and burning of soy wax candles can greatly benefit the American agricultural economy. When soy wax replaces common paraffin wax, an estimated 60 million pounds of soy beans will be required for annual candle production. I predict we’ll see some happy farmers!

Soot can be a “white soot” that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Soy wax will produce little black soot—you will not see that thick black ring on the jars, nor will it do the black soot damage to homes, but it may produce white soot. No other manufacturer will tell you that.

Some other air contaminants in paraffin fumes include methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and naphthalene–substances found in paint, lacquer and varnish removers.

Research suggests breathing paraffin fumes from a burning paraffin candle in an enclosed environment, has much the same detrimental effect as inhaling significant second-hand tobacco smoke, or even the exhaust fumes of a small diesel engine! More scent or fragrance oil does not mean more aroma. Just like there are different grades of fuel, there are also different grades of fragrance oils. Some contain more “fragrance” and some contain more “fillers”.

Coffee, the “Elixir of the Gods,” kickstarts the days of more than 100 million Americans, and more than half of us say we’re more or less addicted to the stuff.

For this dependence, we sometimes feel guilt and shame, probably due in part to the common but unsubstantiated claim that coffee is somehow bad for our health. After all, can something so delicious and effective at sharpening our focus be good for us?

Indeed it can. And coffee is, scientists now tell us. And here’s the crazy part: the health benefits may increase the more cups we enjoy.

Let’s run through some of the main health benefits of a cup (or four):

It may extend your life.

That’s right: in at least two studies, including one released just this week, coffee drinkers have been shown to live longer than non-coffee drinkers. A study out of the Harvard School of Public Health found that people who drink three to five cups of coffee a day had a 15 percent less chance of premature death than those who didn’t drink coffee. This supports the findings of a 2012 study from the National Cancer Institute in which coffee drinkers were shown to live longer than non-coffee drinkers.

It fights off Type 2 diabetes.

putting-feet-upWith more than 15 studies suggesting that coffee consumption is associated with diabetes prevention, this point is one of the more rock-solid health benefits to prove. In 2005, a team of Harvard researchers reviewed nine of these studies, finding that those who drink six or seven cups of coffee daily were 35 percent less likely to have type 2 diabetes than those who drank fewer than two cups a day.

It may fight off cancer.

In several studies, coffee drinkers were less susceptible to certain cancers—including prostate, oral cancer, and recurrence of breast cancer. Keep in mind this is an association rather than a cause and effect, and that scientists aren’t sure why the association is occurring.

It may help prevent strokes.

A 2013 American Heart Association study of more than 80,000 Japanese men and women concluded that a daily cup of green tea or coffee resulted in a 20 percent lower risk of stroke.

It may help stave off Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

One of the longest-known associations between coffee drinking and better health is that with Parkinson’s disease. As early as 1968, studies were showing an inverse relation between the effects of Parkinson’s and coffee consumption. This was supported by a 2010 review of the available data which found that regularly drinking two to three cups daily cuts a person’s risk of Parkinson’s disease by as much as 25 percent.

In an experiment performed on mice in 2012, researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that when mice were temporarily starved of oxygen and lost the ability to form new memories, those who were given caffeine regained their ability to form new memories 33 percent faster than the non-caffeinated mice. This has significant implications on treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

images (9)You could say that the history of organic gardening started centuries ago when ancient civilizations would till the soil, plant the crops and then harvest them. As the demand for such goods increased, fertilizers or pesticides were used to help grow crops but because It was only later on that people realized these were also being eaten after they were washed thus there was a campaign to go back to organic gardening.

There was renewed interest in the 1980’s that people in the US began to switch back to organic gardening. The Department of Agriculture even gave the farmers incentives to this old approach and as the demand for such products grew, more and more people have shifted to this method. This has been the trend in many countries especially in Europe.

But what is organic gardening? Well, aside from no longer using pesticides and fertilizers, gardeners will have to rely on compost, crop residue, crop rotation, integrated pest management and mechanical cultivation in order to preserve soil productivity and combat pests.

Currently, such organic gardening methods are regulated by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements which helps farmers grow crops in 75 million acres of land across the globe.

Their goal can be summed up into two words and that is sustainable development so that the land that is used will be around for the next generation because there is a healthy ecosystem.

Is organic gardening effective? The answer is yes. Over a 22 year study that was released to the public in 2005, the results showed that going back to the basics produces the same amount of corn and soybean yields as conventional methods. However, it does so by consuming less energy and without any pesticide residue.

foot1A study done by the University of Michigan shows developing countries that practice organic gardening could double or even triple their crops mainly because they do not have the financial resources to buy pesticides or fertilizer.

Because you too can make this happen in your own backyard, the nice thing about organic gardening is that farmers are not the only ones that can do it. You just have to learn how to till the soil and keep it in good condition, how to make your crops grow and how to fight against pests so you will be able to harvest them.

You can even turn this into a hobby and see how fun it is to make grow your own vegetables instead of buying these from the grocery. So, go online or buy a few books to learn how easy it is to do.

Remember, the key to a successful harvest regardless of what you decide to plant is all in the planning. Take into account how much you are willing to spend, your limited space and how much time and effort is in your hands.

You will also need to get the right gardening tools like gloves and a tiller to break the soil because it makes the task much easier than doing this by hand so that in a few months, you will be able to see what you planted grow.

As you can see, the history of organic gardening isn’t really something new. We have been doing it for a very long time and we probably lost sight of it but we learned our mistakes and we are simply going back to the basics.
